New Goals?

Weigh In: 273.5
Calories Counted: 0 (but then again, it's 8am)

It's no secret that I've been taking a close look lately at how I do things, and what's effecting me. Last night's blog was based on a comment that Marcol had pointed out to me, something that I've taken a lot of time to think about. Today's blog is about another comment that was made, this time by Jay. Others have said this to me, but for some reason, this one caught me. Jay said:

"It might make sense to change your focus a bit. I've noticed that you have had a major focus on scale weight. What other goals do you have for your body besides losing weight?

You've lost 100 lbs, you should be able to do a whole bunch of stuff you weren't able to do before, or are very close to some athletic feats you haven't been able to achieve for a long time. What are those things you've always wanted to do with your body but aren't doing?

If you were training for a boxing match, or trying to run an 8 minute mile, you might start to see food as a fuel rather than something that only helps/hinders your weight loss."

That makes a lot of sense to me - but now the question is, what are my goals other than the ones that revolve around the scale?

I guess I've never thought of it. I mean - I was always good at sports. I never excelled at anything, but I was the guy who was a 'jack of all trades' - not a star at any sport, but I could hold my own no matter what it was. A generalist, if you will.

I play organized volleyball on Tuesdays and I'm in a softball league during the summer - but what other things could I do that I haven't thought of? I'd love to get into boxing, but I'm way too much of a wimp to do that. Glass Joe, right here.

The first thing that comes to mind is either running or walking. I'm planning on doing the Turkey Trot again this Thanksgiving - and this is something is very important to me. Last Thanksgiving was Day 1 of my transformation - and I can't believe that's a few weeks from being a year ago. I've been sorting it out in my mind as I write this blog out (which explains the rambled thoughts), and I think that's what I'm going to do.

From now until Thanksgiving, I'm going to move from weight loss goals to running goals. My goal this year is to run the 5k all the way through without stopping. And if I'm being honest, that's probably way too much of a goal to think of in the next few weeks - the last 5k I ran, I got to the mile point and had to walk.

It's strange how you can sit down at your computer with a plan to write about 'thinking about goals', and by the time you're at the end of the post, you've got a plan.

There's something to be said for putting your thoughts on (virtual) paper, eh?

I love it! If you're training for something, it will be that much more incentive to make sure you're eating right.

Looking at your times for previous 5k's, I think you underestimate yourself. If you train consistantly (run/walk 2-3 5k's per week), you can get a 5k running all the way in a few weeks. It's not like you're saying you have to run fast, just run all the way.

One way to do it is to find a partner who can train with you and push you a little bit.

I also loved Jay's comment yesterday. It got me thinking about how I've eaten this week. My main focus has been to get back into bootcamp shape, so I've been trying to avoid crap all week. I've eaten somewhat normally, but I've been trying to eat good food at the right times...kind of like a strategy :)

I can't wait to do a 5k with you guys. Hopefully there's one in December or January at the latest.

Kristen - the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning is in Detroit. Let us know and we'll all do that one if you guys can make it.

I can relate to your frustration as I have always looked at health and fitness (IMHO they are inseperable) as a 12 week, 30 day, 6 month, 8 DVD (or 12 VHS) program. Get the idea? I'd start and as soon as I could rev up and make some headway, the program was over and backwards I would slide.

I think I've turned the corner in realizing that this is something that I must do for the rest of my life. Scary as that thought may be, it's true. And being true to yourself is where it all begins.

Congrats on your (near) 1-yr. anniversary!

Turkey trot it is. I'm making no promises about running the whole thing, but I'll be there. Last time 43:22 from the Race for the Cure. This year's time (even if I have to run intervals) will hopefully be under 40 minutes. Thats a three and a half minute difference, and the Race for the Cure was also a wee bit shorter (3 miles instead of 5k) but I think it's doable. Let me just make sure the wife won't freak out at me about it.

Don't care that you do it hun.. *no freaking out here* You DO need to find out of you are working that day though. Alot depends on that. My mom's doing dinner-and will do it early if you have to work. But you want to run with the turkeys (LOL) go ahead! You'll do great. :)

Nicole/Jim - if it helps, I'm pretty sure the run is over by like 10am. If I remember, it starts like 8am or something along that line. It ends before the parade on Woodward starts, so that should give you an idea.
