Reality Check

Weigh In: 296

I've got to get a few things off my chest.

Frankly, I'm getting a bit irritated at myself. First off, I've been at, or around, 296 for about 2 weeks now. A bit of a plateau, if you will. But it's been self induced, and it's about time that I call myself out on it.

Why would I go to the gym 6-7 days a week, play softball at night, and eat right 99% of the time if that last 1% is just going to screw me, day in and day out? It doesn't make sense to me - and the fact that I've been failing to the make the right decisions with my food lately just pisses me off.

I mean, I've got every perfect excuse in the book. Let me know if you've heard any of these before:

1. I haven't had time so I just grabbed what was there.
2. Everyone at work ordered something, so just a few bites doesn't hurt.
3. It's a holiday - the BBQ is part of it, I didn't want to be left out.

Take the last two days for example. Monday was awesome. We had about 40+ of our favorite relatives at our new house for our big 'kickoff' BBQ - the first major bash at our new place, and most of my wife and my relatives got to see our house for the first time. I was manning the grill, and probably put about 40 burgers, 40 dogs, 20 brats, you name it - on the grill. I was the "King of the Grill", as the phrase on the front of my apron proclaimed.

So why, if I'm the "King", did I have to have a cheeseburger and a brat, along with about 3 solid hours of snacking on traditional BBQ appetizers and side dishes?

And then again yesterday, for my sister-in-law's birthday, we had them over for a small BBQ, this time much more low key - and with less 'excuses', right? I had 2 cheeseburgers, and since I was 'watching my weight', I took the top half of the bun (on the second burger only) off to "save calories".

But, I wasn't thinking about saving calories when I had the macaroni salad, cream cheese rolls or even that scoop of Neapolitan ice cream, right?

And I sit back and wonder why the scale hasn't budged. Hell, I should consider myself LUCKY that I'm not over 300 again.

It just gets me mad - I step on that scale every single day. I mean, I really bust my ass in the gym, and take a ton of pride in that. And then I eat great for "most" of the day.

That's about as helpful as being a fighter jet pilot who doesn't crash "most" of the time.

I need to get my head on straight, and stop justifying the stupid crap.

Eat the good stuff, skip the bad stuff.

It's so damn simple.

Are you still counting calories? I've noticed that when I stop doing that, and I "assume" what I'm taking in, that's when I usually get off track. What got me out of my funk was finding the right caloric level, and nailing it every day for about five days. The weight just started melting off at that point.

Hang in there, man.

Rob, I agree with you. You are never going to lose the weight eating like that :)

Going to the gym for 6-7 days a week will help you to maintain though if you happen to be eating that much.

I do the same exact thing though. It really works when you put it all together, and sometimes that's just really hard to do. Sounds like you've already got it figured out...go with what you know!

Oh, and the Holy Trinity decides to be funny today.

I go on this rant, and then what happens? At work today, we get this email:

"Because of all your hard work, we're treating the entire department to pizza"

And then, the secretary asks me (since I'm the big guy) to help carry it all upstairs into our office, so here I am with a facefull of sausage and pepperoni.

Funny guy, that Son of God.

"so here I am with a facefull of sausage"

I accidentaly watched a movie that started out like that, once. I turned it off REAL quick.

You're aware of your mistakes, and the only thing you can do is move forward. Get back up, dust yourself off and keep going. You can't unmake any bad decisions, so don't beat yourself up (too badly) over them. Just have one or two pieces of pizza. That's about 500 calories. Make up for your lunch with a super-healthy dinner.

You're doing great, Rob. So you had a bad stretch. It's going to happen. Holidays and celebrations are a part of life. Enjoy them. Just get back on track when they're over. :)

OMG. Kevin is crackin my sh*t up. Facefull of sausage...LOL

That is pretty awful about the pizza, Rob...did you indulge?

Nope, not a bite.

I appreciate Beck's thought about just having a few slices and counting the calories - but I am tired of having the food control me. It's the other way around, how it used to be, starting today.

If I planned 2 pieces of pizza into my day, it'd be all good, but I brought a lunch, and that's what I'm going to have.

And also, Kev- you're right - I have gotten away from calorie counting. I've been pretty faithful for most meals, but then I do these things where I don't know what they are, so I stop doing it.

I need you guys to call me out when I'm not posting my calories - I need to do that again.

I know we're all different, but I think your way is easier for me. It's best just to stick to your original plan and eat what you brought for lunch - especially considering your recent struggle with keeping the diet clean. It would be just one more step in the wrong direction...and then, since I already blew it today, I might as well have x for dinner.

Like you said...Control the food.

I realize I'm chiming in late here, but...

It's hard when you work out, and expect that to make up for dietary mistakes, because it won't. From my experience and learning, what you put in your mouth has the MOST effect on your weight loss. In fact, I usually lose weight faster when I dont workout and eat less (ask Kristen about this).

Not that that's what you should do, but don't forget that. It's good you're recognizing your behavior and changing it. I'm also just getting back into healthy eating after vacation and moving. It's hard, but when you start cheating here and there it begins to snowball. And then? You end up shaped like a snowman.

Tuck,

You can do it, bro, it's just a matter of wanting to bad enough. Everytime you want to slip up and you feel the excuses coming, and you don't want to be left out, and everyone's doing it, etc, just remember. Mine hurts too, bro.

Hey, that's life, Rob. As long as you know what to do. Simple as that, right? yeah, I know, easier said.. but I mean lookatcha - you're passed your half way mark. You know what to do. ;)

Billy - I'm telling you, I feel like it's been FOREVER since I did one. I was going to do a blog last night like I usually do, but then the Pistons ended up going 2OTs and I was up until almost 2am - and back up at 5:30am.

I was just coming back on to do one, so you'll have your fix in a few minutes ;)
