I'm 3 days away from having a 1 pound weight loss month. Obviously, pretty frustrated about that. I feel like I'm doing everything I could be doing - I'm keeping my calories in my 'range', I'm working out damn near 7 days a week, I'm doing other active things like 2-mile bike rides and the golf driving range, I'm going for 9 holes of golf tonight, I play softball at least 2 times a week.. you name it. Healthy lifestyle, healthy choices. I'm a smooth running machine.
But I think I've got a flat tire. You know how that goes - when you look at it, most of it is perfectly rounded. A perfectly rounded tire rolls - and gets you to where you want to be. But that flat part - when it hits the ground, it's harder to push. Some would even say that when you've got a flat tire, you can't go ANYWHERE.
I'm running a 5k down the streets of Detroit tomorrow morning. We're getting there early, probably like 7am - and then by 9am I'll be trying to beat my previous time of 46:48. Personally, I want to break the 40 minute mark, but I wouldn't be disappointed if I didn't - if I can only beat the previous time. I have lost 60 pounds since my last run, so it should be possible - I've done it once already - but it's not like I've been in 'running training mode' and running a ton, so we'll see what happens.
So, this flat tire needs air to fix it right? It needs the "fire" that Billy was talking about.
To get that "fire" going - you need a spark.
I'm hoping this 5k can help push me past this point of frustration so I can fix my flat tire and finish the race. Sitting in the pit stop for a month frustrates me to a point that I can't really verbalize. Honestly, if it wasn't for my workouts with my cousin, and my teammates on my two blogs, who knows what would have happened this month.
Here's to getting to the finish line together.

As a member of your pit crew, I want to help you fix this flat.
From where I'm standing? You're too focused on exercise and not enough on nutrition. Exercise is great, but it can only take you so far.
Try cutting your calories down to 2000-2200/day for a few days or a week. And focus on Lean Protein and Veggies. Stay away from starchy carbs as much as possible. Whole wheat flour and all.
Give it a try. Can't hurt, right?
I'll be waiting in the pit next time around.
Have you been adjusting your BMR as your weight drops? Even an extra 200 calories a day over your mark could bring your weight loss to a hault.
Something else to consider, and we've all heard it a million times, check measurements. Are you losing inches off your gut? Arms? Legs? Neck? The culprit could be muscle.
Good luck on your 5K (which is likely over as I type this comment) and you'd better post your time ASAP! :)
Hang in there, man.
Beck, the race is tomorrow morning, so I'll be updating probably sometime mid-day. It starts at 9am, I'll be down there around 7.
One thing I've been doing today is going back into my records on calorie-count.com and seeing how I was eating when I was losing the most.
What I found is that I was zigzagging the way I am now, but I had some MUCH lower days than I've seen before - like 1500,1700 days lined up with 2200 and 2400. I've been doing the 2200's and 2400's, but not much of the 1500-1700.
Plus, a lot of you guys have been talking about the starchy carbs, so I'm really going to cut those out for a while - not 'adkins', but really being conscious of them. We'll see what happens.. hopefully I can get this thing kickstarted.
here's what you do: ONLY have starchy carbs WITHIN AN HOUR after working out. The rest of the time- just lean protein and veggies. That's a pretty good guideline to go by.
Rob if youre keeping in your calorie range and getting in the exercise and not seeing results consider a few things:
Too much working out and not enough food intake makes the body think its in starvation mode
Too much working out right calorie intake but not enough rest, body cant recalibrate
Right amount of workout, right calorie intake but bad choices in where those calories are coming from.
If its the first two, youve had tons of comments on what you could do. If its the latter consider tweaking your macronutrient ratios. If theyre not right they will get you everytime. And you may want to consider tweaking your calories by 200. It usually does the trick!
Stick with it my friend, we shall overcome!
Thanks, Marcol. That does help a lot.
What I'm thinking is, now that I'm looking at WHAT calories I'm taking in, I feel like I'm WAY too high on the carbs - so I'm going to be switching that.
For example, I had spaghetti last night. Not a lot, not too much, still kept in my calorie range, but I'm thinking spaghetti ain't the right choice. I'm not a big pasta guy, but lately it seems to have been around more.
I'm going to take the advice in here - I'm cutting my calories on certain days to give a bigger zigzag dip, I'm going to do more lean meats and veggies, and I'm going to back off on the carbs, especially the white starches.
And if that doesn't work and I still need to lose 40, I'll just cut off my head. =)
**WARNING: CONTROVERSY AHEAD**
I'd stop zig-zagging for a few weeks. I hit a one-pound weight loss month after I lost several from zig-zagging. Then I just aimed for 2,400 everyday. I changed NOTHING else - just ate the amount of calories I'm supposed to eat. And I lost four pounds in my first week, and almost nine total in May.
Just try it for 10 days and see how your body reacts. For me, it was like fueling the furnace, and I burned calories like crazy.
Just a thought.
I dont really know what you mean by zig-zagging but I would say give a look at "Metabolism Advantage" book or precision nutrition online it will further explain what Billy and I have been talking about and give you specific guidelines to follow. It works if you try it. As Billy stated if you must have the pasta, oatmeal, bread then you have to only have it at the right time. What time is that well Billy gave that answer too...you can only have them after a rigorous weight training that lasted at least 90minutes. If you worked out like that then you earned the right to eat those carbs within 3 hours following that workout - NO OTHER TIME!!!! John Berardi says something I believe strongly: "theres no such thing as good or bad food just good or bad times to eat those foods." If we can grasp that thinking and eat the right amounts of protein and veggies, and fats at all the other times we will find that we're no longer on a diet but that we've learned a new lifestyle. And truthfully I'd prefer a new lifestyle rather than a diet because with a diet once Im done with it then Im going to gain everything I lost if it hasnt become a way of life for me. Its that simple.
PS- I dont think you need to cut your calories on certain days just cut what sorts of calories you eat on certain days if you havent earned them. For example if you strength train 4 out of 7 days (smile) then you can only eat starchy carbs -bread, oatmeal, pasta etc - on those 4 days (within the 3 hour window following the strength training workout) and the other 3 days you eat the same amount of calories but the macros for those days would be higher in protein and fat and lower in carbs and your carbs on those 3 days would be from veggies.
You'll do great tomorrow at the Race for the Cure-just remember, you'll have a friend in Jim who'll be right there with you. And we'll be miles behind walking with the baby in the stroller in case you boys need a lift. LOL
All in all, keep in mind you're also running for those who fight Breast Cancer everyday(and they aren't so concerned with your time, just the support you're giving them by being there) :)
