False Start

Weigh In: 281.5
Five Day Average: 280.8
Calories Counted: Not sure, but not good.

My 5-day average went down today, but only because a 283.5 came off the record. Either way, I'll take it. Today was one of those days that couldn't have been avoided. I suppose I could have not went, but it was a family birthday gathering, so I think it would have been rude. I did pretty well with the eating today, but the family got together at a chinese restaurant for dinner. I checked the menu up and down, but as you probably already know - not many good choices at a joint like that. So, I ate poorly. I had a smaller serving, but almond chicken is almond chicken. No getting around that.

Also, Gary couldn't make it to the gym today, so I was on my own. The cards were stacked against me today. First off, I was exhausted because I didn't go to bed until 12:30am, and then I was up at 5:30 and in the gym at 6. Been doing that for a while, so the body's having a hard time catching up. Then, to get there, and my IPOD went to crap - it's pretty much fried and I have to get a new one, so here I am at the gym, feeling horrible, and having NO music. Needless to say it wasn't a very high quality workout.

So August 1 wasn't great.

Not the end of the world, and the best news is that I have 30 days to make up for it. So tomorrow, strong - organized workout. 10 pounds are coming off this month if I have to cut off my arm. Besides, my partner is counting on me. Until then!

I don't know why Chinese food gets such a bad rap. I know there's the rich sauces, big portions, and lots of rice, but I work near chinatown and eat asian food almost daily. I usually just stick with a chicken with vegetable type dish, go easy on the rice, and cut the portion in half. You're getting lean meat and vegetables, and keeping the portions down. Just my .02 - all that Chinese hasn't affected me negatively.

I think you can eat healthy just about everywhere as long as you make the best choices and are smart about portions.

But if you're feeling bad, it probably means you had too much of the wrong thing ;) Listen to your body, it knows.

I was going to say the same thing as billy... go for the lower carb Chinese dishes like broccoli beef, or some chicken and veggies as suggested. The ssezshwan (SP?) beef is really yummy too, just skip the rice... I guess try to avoid the deep fried breaded ones with all the yummy sweat and sour sauce. With anything portion control is key which I am sure you know better than I.

Sounds like you need to outline a better solo work out too. Seems like when Gary isn't there your not as productive (have read you mention that several times).

Anyway what do I know, just trying to be helpful and get you thinking as you always do for me. Sucks about the i-pod... I gotta have the music.

My problem isn't the 'solo workout plan' more than the motivation to do it on a day I feel like crap. As much as I feel fired up when I'm writing blogs and eating right (not counting tonight's dinner), when I'm in the gym lately, I feel flat. Need to shake that.

I hear you man, it always helps to have a work out buddy to push you when you don't fill like going or pushing hard. Its been a while since I have had someone to workout with so I have kind of forgotten.

Anyway get some air in that flat and get back on the road :)

Beck has been swamped today, but she weighed in at 180.8. Sorry for the delay.

Hey Rob,

My Ipod Nano also went out last week. I'm kind of proud of it because it probably went because of all the wear and tear and sweat i submit it to in my workouts !

Going to get one of those new aluminum nano to see how fast i can wear this one out !

That's exactly what happened to mine I think. I used to wear it around my neck under my shirt and it got drenched. I figured those things were good for that - considering that's what they're used for, and they even give you a lanyard to wear with it.

For the past month, buttons were not working, and it would just turn off out of nowhere. Yesterday it finally bit the dust, so I'm sans music for now. I'm headed back to the store to see if they had a warranty on it today.

I defintely feel you on the music. Sometimes its like you just cant get into a groove with out that one song pumping you up. Maybe you should try a different exercise to jump start your motivation again. Something that you normally dont do. Hang in there!

I got an ipod shuffle for the gym- man, it's the best.

It sucks because you can't see whats playing, but my philosophy is not to screw with it much at the gym anyway, just put it on and go.

Its so tiny, and just clips to the bottom of your shirt, with the earphones running up through your collar. And it's cheap too, compared to a full ipod.

Funny, I just read this in Men's Health today:

"Travel east for healthy eats. Restaurants tend to serve large portions, and the food can be high in fat. Plus, there's often a limited choice of vegetables. "Picking the type of restaurant wisely can help," says Hope Warshaw, R.D., author of Eat Out, Eat Right. Warshaw says that Asian cuisine--Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese--generally includes more vegetables."
