Yesterday's Weigh In: 274
Today's Weigh In: 273
Yesterday's Calories: 1500 (including 2 beers)
Last night was hectic, so I didn't get a blog in, so here we go.
Ate damn near nothing yesterday. Just wasn't up for it. It wasn't intentional, but my day just kind of went like that. We did end up going to Don Pablo's for dinner, and I got Mama's Skinny Enchilada's (which are fantastic), so I had a pretty healthy eating day.
Today, I woke up and was ready to go to the gym. Instead, I decided to map out a 3.1 mile run (also known as a 5k) and just run it. See how much I could do. My goal was to go as far as I could without stopping. I didn't time it technically, but I looked at the clock before I left and then when I got back.
I did the entire thing without stopping. I did 5k.
I wanted to quit a hundred times, but all I could get into my head was "I want to report this to FAT". That was my motivation.
As for the time, it was 10:27am when I left, and when I got back to the house, it was 11:04am. The 5k didn't end in my driveway though, it ended about 5 blocks from my house, it was the closest I could get to an even circle in the neighborhood. So, counting all that, my time 37 minutes, and I'm completely guessing that it took me 5-7 minutes to limp home after I hit the 5k and had to walk home. It was good, because it's definitely smart to cool down.
This tells me that I did this 5k somewhere between 30-33 minutes. I'm pretty damned impressed with that. Just wanted to brag a bit on a weekend success.

Rob thats a really good time for a first 5k (running all the way). I would be hard pressed to run it that fast. Nice work man. Don't go to light on your cals to many days in a row as you know that is counter productive too.
30-33 mins for your 5k is pretty darn impressive. Youre faster than my ass for sure.
Weekends are always hard for me too. My schedule is always different than during the week - far less "structure" and at least for me, that structure keps me on track.
Good going on the run. Here's a suggestion. If you have an iPod (or any MP3 player) make a playlist that runs approx 33-35 minutes. Start that when you begin and try to finish before the last song is over. I have several I use with different songs that get me fired up to run.
I like the idea about the IPOD. I have a playlist, but the 33-35 minute time is a great idea. Good call.
Also, I meant to ask this of our runners in the blog.
What do you think about when you're running? I try to get my mind off of the run itself, every step that I take, how hard it is, how much farther that I have to go, but it seems as if my mind doesn't let me focus on anything but the next stop. Advice?
first off, really nice job on the 5k. Running it without stopping is a huge step forward. It takes physical fitness and mental toughness. The time was pretty good too! You've got to time yourself for the next one, it really helps you push yourself (just like the weigh ins do for weight loss).
When I run, I do think about how long I have to go, but then my mind drifts after I'm going pretty well. I also bring an ipod and it helps get my mind off the run. My weigh ins are always better after runs, so I think about that too :)
Focusing on the run isn't really that bad, it helps clear your head of the other things you have running through there. That's somewhat of a stress relief and it's part of what makes working out good for you.
Rob, you're a beast...5k is nothing to scoff at and then you walk your ass home? Way to get after it!
As far as thoughts while running, I usually think about what coaches used to yell at me: "Cant you run any fatter?!" And "Be an athlete!" Translated: "Dont slow down." And "Check your form." Im always thinking about form, keeping the arms bent at 45 degrees, chest up, not slouching and keep your feet kicking, not flopping your feet flat on the ground.
I try to think about what I expect my life to be like at my goal weight. Like what people will say to me when they see me. Or the thought of being able to go for a run on a nice sunny beach with my shirt off and not feel nasty. To be able to compete with people that are in shape in sports. Or being able to smoke my friends in some physical challenge. chasing my kids around and not getting tired. All the things you want to be when you reach your weight goals. I think shonakees remarks on form are important too. Or you can use anger to fuel your run. I do that on occasion. Mostly against haters and doubters (people who don't think you will succeed.)
