Thursday Weigh In: 280.5
Friday Weigh In: 278.5
Ok, so I was going to post a blog last night but my computer completely fried yesterday. It won't start up. My dad seems to think I shorted out the motherboard, which really sucks. Guess who will be messing with the computer this week and living off of his outdated laptop?
Anyway, been thinking about this whole weight loss thing and how I wanted to set goals. I have been talking to Melissa about running, and I think we're going to train for a half-marathon. The Detroit Free Press one is in October, which is about a month after the 3-day walk which is 60 miles, so we'll also be training for that. She tells me there's a half-marathon in April - which seems really, REALLY soon - so we'll see how that goes. I think I'm going to committ to it and start training. The problem is, I feel better running outside than I do on a treadmill, the whole movement of a treadmill doesn't feel natural to me. And, with it being 5 degrees outside and a wind chill under 0, the task seems daunting.
Either way, I'm going to start running more. I've been in the gym every day doing my thing, but I don't really have a 'direction'. I just go and do things. I think if I start an actual training REGIMEN, maybe it'll help me with the other aspects of this weight loss thing that I've struggled with these past few months.
More on this later, just wanted to check in today since I wasn't able to hit the computer up last night. Eating has been MUCH better now that I've gotten back into my work routine, and the weight has reflected it. It's hard to get excited about losing weight right now until I get back into the 260s, so for now, it's a matter of just doing what needs to be done and putting up with seeing the 270s. I did it to myself, I can't be mad about it.
So, another day. Weekend Warriors, we need to start it back up. Hope everyone (especially those that haven't reported in since the New Year) is doing well.

I really think that lifting and HIIT are the best weapons you have in your arsenal for fat loss. Running is OK, but I wouldn't rely to heavily on it, and like I said, I would be careful about the injuries it inevitably produces, especially in bigger guys.
I see you are rudderless in the gym. Maybe you should look through my workout sheet downloads and use one of them? You need to go into the gym with a plan, otherwise you're just screwin around...
The goal is to NOT be a bigger guy, though. Have you ever seen a 270 pound runner?
I don't plan on replacing the gym with running. I plan on adding it to what I'm doing.
Yeah, but you are a bigger guy now, and if you do a lot of running, I worry that it will cause problems. You're already talking about your hip hurting. I know plenty of guys who weigh like 160 who screwed up knees and hips by running too much. The last thing I want to see is for you to end up out of commission, that's all.
i like the idea, but keep a close monitor on your body and listen to it. If you start having back, hip, or knee pain while running, take a few days off.
Also, I agree HIIT is the best way to go about it right now. Do 7-10 intervals every morning and set the intervals at whatever you're comfortable at, as long as the High one is pushing you. If you dont have trouble finishing your session you're not working hard enough.
I think you can do this and you'll be fine, but I'd stick to treadmills for now as most of them have shock absorbers to help your joints, and dont be ashamed to walk/jog on it.
HIIT on the treadmill m-f, good eating, 2-3 weight sessions a week has done it for me. there is no reason it wont work for you.
Rob, you know your body better than anyone. If you feel good running for endurance, keep it up. Take care to listen to the aches and pains, though. No one likes a gimp, they slow down the pack.
As for the road vs treadmill debate, I feel you on the boredom of the treadmill. My brain just doesn't like seeing the same scenery. I can run faster outside because my brain recognizes that we're going somewhere. But, when it's cold outside, and you're recovering from FP, road-running is a no-no.
They make balaclavas for runners. They help warm up the air you're breathing in so it doesn't hurt so much. I've been using one on days when it's over 45 degrees out. Colder than that and you'll catch me on the treadmill. Mix it up, boss, and keep it up. You'll go 60 and 0 in your second season.
